of time and distance, which are not the same
March 19, 2005 – 4:51 PMUpdates for those who still read this.
I fainted at school Thursday night. I still don’t know why. First time I’ve ever completely and totally fainted, falling-down fainted, in all my life. It was surreal; it seems like it happened to somebody else instead of me. It was embarrassing as hell when I woke up.
…
and now for a slightly more lighthearted anecdote. This is a TRUE story. This is not a secondhand, or hearsay account. This is an actual conversation I personally had Friday.
Actual dialogue with one of my trainees at work:
HIM (having just taken a call from a slightly snippety Tacoma, WA tech): Geez. And I thought Southern techs were supposed to be nicer than the Manhattan ones!
ME (Doing a double-take back at the Tacoma, WA address on the screen): Huh? Southern?
HIM (stares blankly at me, then at screen, then back at me): …?
ME (thinking he’s probably just mistaking the state abbreviation for something else): “WA” stands for Washington.
HIM: …Yeah?
ME: It’s Washington state, not DC. Not that DC even qualifies as Southern.
HIM: ….
ME: …. You know where Washington state is located, right?
HIM (growing defensive): I know it’s not in New York City, which means it’s south.
ME: [laughs disbelievingly]
HIM (more defensively): Anyway, I was never good in history.
ME: [laughing harder] WHAT???
HIM: …
ME: You mean geography, right?
HIM: What ever, they’re the same thing in school!
Good grief. I’m also the product of the public school system, but at least I chose to ABSORB most of my education.
