Moost Unusual Indeed
June 6, 2007 – 6:37 PMNot five minutes after I got done griping to my husband that the average American adult is at a 3rd grade reading level (or so the general statistics claim; my experience in teaching adults suggests that their reading level is much lower, sadly), the following appeared on the TV screen.
“Soooomebody’s losing their copyeditor job … and possibly a producer job as well …” –RSB![]()
The news story was about Rudy Giuliani speaking during the GOP debate when lightning struck. “Moost Unusual” was the topic header on the screen for well over ten minutes. And then, apropos of absolutely NOTHING, out of nowhere, Klaus Nomi appears on the screen, singing.
I can handle surreal. Surreal is a regular visitor in our household. We sit down to dinner with Surreal at least three nights a week, and occasionally visit Surreal out on the streets at three a.m. But I’m not used to Surreal making sudden blunt attacks out of nowhere on CNN prime time. Wow. Holy tri-mohawks, Batman! After this brief Klaus Nomi interlude, they cut back to Rudy Giuliani.
I don’t know what surprises me more: The overall weirdness of that news segment, or the fact that my husband knew at a glance this bizarre character’s name (”He sold about seven records. He really sucked.”) .

It’s in two different fonts, too.

Well, technically it’s the same font family, it’s just that the first word is serif, the second word is sans serif. That would class them as the same family, and in general usage, you’d still call it the same font.
Nevertheless, all that said, this probably means a graphic designer lost a job as well.
Or should have.
Now, really, if CNN would just get rid of that godawful Jeannie Moost, whose story this was in the first place, the world would be a much better place to be.
