Paul McCartney Day
June 5, 2007 – 11:18 AMOK, so my first mistake of the afternoon was walking to Starbucks for some lunch. I wanted one of those little bottled juice drinks and an egg sandwich.
Today, in case you missed it, is Paul McCartney’s debut of his new CD on the Starbucks label. I’m not sure how or why. Anyway, they’re playing his CD nonstop all day in Starbucks today. I was standing in line when I saw his picture on the CD mugging at me from the CD stand next to the counter.
I thought to myself, “This doesn’t sound too bad. I kinda like it.”
And then, and THEN …
The song broke out into the Cher / Madonna / probably-N’Sync-too Vocoder effect. Yes, you know what I’m talking about. It’s not actually a vocoder and my musician peeps will know how to correct me on this, but the Vocoder Effect From Hell broke out and made itself a prominent part of the song in a most offensive manner. It was bizarre. It was bewildering. It was unbecoming to a former Beatle. It made my brain cry.
Jesus, Paul. Just … man.
One Response to “Paul McCartney Day”
I’d have to hear it, but based on your description, I’m guessing Autotune.
“The harmonization is intended to increase the musical quality of a vocal track without revealing the singing as processed. Still, with extreme parameter values, the Auto-Tune has also become popular as a distinctively electronic voice effect, similar to a vocoder.”
